Happy New Year

“When I started this “Quick Hits” newsletter, my thought was to rethink the concept of success as an end goal. I like the idea that we grow from challenge, and it’s our humanness that we often overlook. I love to hear a positive spin on the inevitable chaos life presents. It makes me realize, we are brilliantly multifaceted and what matters most is to look for the sparkle.

This month I am excited to present my “January Picks” — devoted to living happier.

I spend a lot of time in the car driving my sons around. In fact the car has become a kind of extra room of sorts for me…unless I am stuck in horrible traffic at which point the car becomes a trap. Audio books are one of my saviors. I learn, laugh and have grown to love listening to many of them. In fact, I have been known to sit in the driveway listening to a particularly riveting performance. (The Help by Kathryn Stockett is one of those!)

Audio books read by the author are a special treat. When I first became entranced with the field of Positive Psychology (PP), known then as the science of happiness, I was surprised that many of the most highly acclaimed researchers also read their own audio books – AND they were actually interesting and enjoyable. My two favorites (#’2 & 3 below) provide a great intro on the topic. #1 on my list was written and read by a familiar character and gets top billing for being loaded with (PP) and traffic or not, it is LOL funny.

1) Seriously…I’m Kidding, By Ellen Degeneres: deeply disguised secrets on positive psychology, even Ellen’s writers won’t admit to. Hilarious!!! To read the Saturday Evening Post review, click here.

2) THE HOW OF HAPPINESS A New Approach to Getting the Life You Want, by Sonja Lyubomirsky Ph.D.– Strategies to suit your individual style.

3) POSITIVITY, by Barbara Fredrickson Ph.D.

How we have learned to thrive, not just survive.

Happy Holidays!
